Excerpt:
“Does everyone cheat?” Thomas asked.
“I don’t. Didn’t,” Gabriel amended. “My mother never cheated, and neither did Josh.”
“So, you three were the only ones in the world who never cheated.”
Gabriel threw up his hands. “How the hell should I know? I can only tell you we knew how hurtful cheating can be, so we never wanted to inflict it on anyone else.”
“Is that why you went through women one after another? Because you didn’t want to hurt them?”
Thomas made it sound like women passed through his life like widgets on an assembly line. The comparison made him wince. “I don’t like hurting anyone.”
“But then Sloane came along and messed up your orderly life. You couldn’t simply leave her behind like you did with all the others. She meant too much to you, didn’t she?”
He couldn’t deny that he cared for Sloane. “Yes.”
“And you resented her for that, didn’t you? How dare she make you fall in love?”
“What? No, that’s not true!”
Thomas ignored his protest. “So, you did what you always do when you’re confronted with something you can’t control. When you feel resentment or anger. You lash out, accuse them of cheating. After all, your father cheated on you, so Sloane must have cheated too.”
“No! That doesn’t even make sense!”
“You also resented Sloane because she took your focus away from Josh. It was during your time with her that his mental health took a serious nosedive. You didn’t realize it because you didn’t keep as closely in touch as usual. You were too busy pursuing Sloane.”
“No! Stop! I don’t want to hear anymore!”
