Character Interview with Rubén Lozano


Tell us about yourself. Why did your author write your story?


My first appearance in the Lozano Cartel series was back in book 1, Dark Hearts Aflame. I show up at the end and have to make a brutal choice—do I continue to do the bidding of my monstrous father, or do I protect my little sister, Carmen? I chose to help Carmen and her man out of a dangerous situation, so that put me in the rifle scope of my author, Amber Daulton. She has a tendency to kill off characters she likes if she can’t figure out a story for them, and she really, really liked me. So I had to die, or get a woman. Thank God she chose to throw Drina Cabrera into my path in Lost in His Spiderwebs. I’ve worked too hard to rise through the ranks of my family cartel just to die now.

 

What was it that drew you to your partner?

 

Drina Cabrera is one of the most stubborn, hardheaded women I’ve ever met. But that’s not what drew me to her. Ten years earlier, we were lovers. Our relationship was hot, heavy, and built on lies. My lies. When she learned the truth, she walked out of my life. Then our paths crossed again. All the anger, resentment, and desire I’d pushed down for her over the years flooded back in. I had to have her back; I needed her to regret ever leaving me. I was a selfish prick, but that’s par for the course. After all, I am the leader of a powerful cartel.

 

A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced Drina?

 

The first day after I bought her from a rival cartel and took her home to my hacienda, I cornered her on the two-story balcony outside her bedchamber. She was still timid and angry with me at that point, which only flamed my desire hotter. I bent her over the balcony rail, kept her on the edge of fear that she could fall off, and played her tightly coiled body like an instrument. If any of my enforcers were around on patrol, they could’ve looked up and seen us. And heard us. She was screaming in pleasure and shouting my name so loud that even a deaf man could’ve heard her.

 

If your partner wants to seduce you, what’s the one surefire trick she can do? 

 

Give me attitude. When Drina plays hard to get, it makes me want her even more.

 

What is Drina’s best feature?


The scar on her cheek. She’s self-conscious of it, so I often show the mark special attention. I touch it, kiss it, lick it—try to make her feel beautiful and empowered. She’s a survivor. The scar is proof of her strength, not a sign of weakness. It’s taken some time, but she’s not so ashamed of it anymore.

 

What was one of the most embarrassing things your author did to you in Lost in His Spiderwebs?

 

My author, Amber, didn’t do much to embarrass me. She did piss me off a few times. One instance that sticks out in my mind is at the end. I’m trudging through the forest in a rainstorm to hunt down one of my enemies, and I twist my ankle. That hurt a like a bitch. Why it had to be raining and the ground muddy, I don’t know, but Amber did everything in her power to make my mission damn near impossible to complete.

Lost in His Spiderwebs is the second book in the Lozano Cartel series, to be released October 14th. Up next is Corrupting His Wife, to be released April 7th, 2026. It’s a dark romance where my best friend, Enrique, kidnaps a woman the week before her wedding to another man. It’s going to be a mess for me to clean up. Right now, though, I’m too busy dealing with my own wayward woman to worry about Enrique with his.

Excerpt

 

“Smile,” Rubén told her. “It’s showtime.”


She nodded and lifted her chin, wincing a little in the flashing camera lights.


As three hand-picked paparazzi snapped pictures of him and Drina from all angles, Rubén counted to thirty before he steered Drina past them to the music room.


“Wow,” Drina murmured as they passed the piano for the ballroom.


A massive chandelier gleamed from the lofty ceiling, its decorative crystals reflecting the soft white light and dancing spots across the ivory walls and the chattering, laughing guests. The live band played instrumental music at the far end of the rectangular room, where Esme’s team had set up fancy tables and chairs for the speech and dinner portion of the evening.


“Why do you keep this room locked up? It’s magnificent.”


He shrugged. “It’s a bitch to clean.”


His blunt answer steepled Drina’s eyebrows. “My, what consideration. I’m sure the housekeeping staff appreciates it,” she teased and pulled him onto the dance floor alongside several other couples. “Let’s dance.”


As her arms slid around his shoulders, he rested his hands on her waist. Her body heat and strawberry aroma enveloped him. Groaning, he gripped the thick fabric of her dress so hard that it bunched and the band of his rings bit into his skin. She rested her head against his chest, and her hair teased his nose. They swayed, lost in each other as though they were the only people around. A foolish notion, one he shouldn’t revel in. If he did, he would ravage her on the floor.


“You have a good turnout,” she murmured while he twirled her about. She spun back into his embrace. “Are any of these people your friends?”


“Hardly.” This was his world. Glamour, power, prestige. The public mask he wore to hide his sinister nature. “You’re swimming in dangerous waters. The sooner you realize I can buy and discard all these sharks and guppies with a flick of my wrist, the better off you’ll be.”


“I’m well aware you’re king of the sharks.”


He snorted, holding her closer. “You’re a barracuda. Lithe grace and sharp teeth.”


“Ooh, I like that.” She nipped at his chin. “I’ll never be a guppy.”


Damn right. As the song ended, he guided her off the dance floor. Duty called.
