#MFRWhooks Blog Hop - An Excerpt from NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE - Say Hello to My Invisible Friend

It's Blog Hop Wednesday. Today I have an excerpt from NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE, book 2 in the Twice in a Lifetime time travel romance series. Apprentice angel Gabriel takes his client Joanna back to 1979 and introduces her to his mentor Thomas, even though she can't see him. Joanna has a hard time believing she's really back in 1979 and young again.

The Twice in a Lifetime series is best enjoyed if read in order. The series is currently available for free on Kindle Unlimited!

Red roses with white pearls are displayed with the text "Book Hooks" and "Marketing for Romance Writers" in elegant script. Romantic mood.

Excerpt:

Again with the angel magic?  She gave him a ‘Get real’ eyeroll. If you expect me to believe it’s 1979, you’re going to have to show me some evidence.

The woman was exasperating. Why can’t you take my word for it?

Patience, Gabriel. You’ll think of something to convince her, Thomas said.

Answers came to him almost immediately. He pointed to a passing car, a funny looking two-door sub-compact with a slanted roof and a rear hatchback. It was painted bright red with a black hood. Check out this car. This thing has to be from the 70s. No one from the 2020s would be caught dead driving it.

I resent that statement, Thomas said. I find Mr. Ford’s Pinto quite intriguing. For a horseless carriage.

Joanna frowned and folded her arms across her chest. So someone has a vintage car. Big deal.

The woman was determined not to believe. Look at all the vehicles parked on the street. They can’t all be vintage cars. Do any of them look like they came from the 2020s?

Well, no. I guess not, she said grudgingly.

Look at your hands, Joanna. Are those the hands of a woman who’s over seventy years old?

She lifted her hands in front of her face, turned them front to back and stared in wonder.

“They don’t look old anymore. No wrinkles, no liver spots.” She spoke aloud, then remembered to communicate telepathically. How did this happen?

I keep telling you, it’s angel magic. It’s 1979 and you’re twenty-nine years old again. Remember how you wore your hair long and straight back then?

Joanna touched her head and lifted the ponytail from her shoulder to examine it. She started to cry. My God, it’s true! I’m young again.

Gabriel gave her a few moments to absorb this information. She soon gathered herself and wiped the tears from her eyes.

Okay, I accept that it’s 1979 and I’m once again twenty-nine years old, crazy as that sounds. I have to admit I feel more energetic and freer from pain than I have in a very long time. But you haven’t told me why we’re here, in front of Lucas’ parents’ house.

Why are we here? Gabriel used his telepathic connection with Thomas to ask the same question.

Because Lucas is living here with his mother right now, Thomas said.

Thomas says it’s because Lucas lives here now, with his mother.

Who’s Thomas?

He’s a senior angel and my mentor. He’s the one who has the power to move us through time. Gabriel pointed at Thomas. He’s standing right here, though you can’t see him. I’m the only one who can.

So, this Thomas is your invisible friend? Gabriel heard the amusement in Joanna’s voice.

Well, yeah. I guess you could say that.

This day is getting crazier and crazier. She grinned and waved in the direction Gabriel had pointed. Hi Thomas. Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you, too, Joanna. Thomas dipped his head and made an elegant bow.

Out of nowhere, a perfect scarlet maple leaf fell into Joanna’s lap, even though the leaves on nearby trees were still mid-summer green.

That’s Thomas’ way of saying hello.

Joanna twirled the leaf’s stem between her thumb and forefinger. Tell him I’m impressed.

He knows.

Book cover features angel wings, a city skyline, and an artist's studio. Text: Never Can Say Goodbye, Twice in a Lifetime Series, Book 2.

Can accepting what can’t be changed give Gabriel’s new client a second chance at love?

Blurb:

Apprentice angel Gabriel Daniels faces his second task in becoming a full-fledged angel. His new client, Joanna Compton, broke up with her fiancé Lucas Kendall in 1971 after a car accident left her paraplegic. She refused to be a burden the way her father was. Eight years later, Joanna, by then a lawyer, declined to take Lucas’ wrongful dismissal case when he came to her for help.

Though Gabriel convinces Joanna to go back to 1979, Joanna insists she’s only doing so to give Lucas the justice she should have helped him attain the first time around. She doesn’t want a second chance at love. Gabriel is desperate to change her mind so he’ll be one step closer to becoming a citizen of Heaven.

Meanwhile, Gabriel’s mentor, senior angel Thomas, shows him how much his inability to accept his parents’ divorce and the bipolar disease that runs in his family has cost him.

Gabriel must help Joanna accept the things she cannot change. And Thomas must help Gabriel do the same or neither will truly be at peace.

It would be really strange! So many things are different. I had Joanna wishing for her cell phone and email. We managed without them back then, but now that I'm used to them, I can't imagine living without them!

I'd like to think that if I had the opportunity to go back to my younger years I would appreciate being young more instead of agonizing over everything. I was often needlessly hard on myself and I think it held me back. I believe that happened to Joanna too.

Oh my, back in the 70s! I like that she finally believed him. And now i wonder how she will enjoy her new younger body.

She'd better appreciate it! I didn't always love my body back in the 70s, but I'd sure like to have it back now!
