#MFRWhooks Blog Hop - An Excerpt from TAKE A CHANCE ON ME - What Does He Want?

Today on the Blog Hop I'm offering an excerpt from TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. When Nick offers Darcy a ride home after work from the pub where she works, she's not sure what he wants from her. But she's excited to take a chance:

Red roses and white pearls with text "Book Hooks" and "Marketing for Romance Writers" on a dark, romantic background.

Excerpt:

After the last stragglers finished their drinks and left the pub, Robert Malone locked the front door and the staff began to clean. Darcy watched as Nick followed Robert’s lead and cleared and wiped tables before turning chairs upside down on top of them. While she mopped, he picked up garbage and hauled it out to the dumpster. He grabbed another mop on his return.

“Why are you doing that?” she asked.

“Because the floor is dirty.”

“You know what I mean. You don’t have to clean. It’s not like you work here.”

“Just helping out, Darcy. Is that a crime?”

“No, but....”

She left the words hanging in the air between them. He said he wanted to spend time with her. What did that mean? Was he saying he wanted a relationship?

Relationships were scary, and besides, her track record was abysmal. Eventually, every man she’d been involved with wanted more than she could give.

Darcy pushed her mop aimlessly. Nick had said there were no strings attached to the ride he was offering, but she didn’t buy it. Maybe he thought the faster they finished closing up, the faster he could get her home and into his bed. Yes, that had to be it. Nick wanting to have sex with her she could deal with. Nick wanting a relationship with her? Not so much.

She shouldn’t think about it. She should focus on her future, and on the adventure she was going to have in Thailand. Anything but thoughts of Nick Cumming’s mouth on hers, his hands caressing her body…

Stop!

She never should have accepted a ride from him. Nick made her feel out of control and out of her depth.

Yet, a part of her wanted to take a chance, to get to know Nick and see where a relationship with him could go, even though the idea was scary.

“Are you planning to use that mop or are you going to lean on it all night?” Nick’s voice held a note of amusement.

Darcy jumped to attention. “I’m working, I’m working.” She turned away so Nick couldn’t see the blush heating her cheeks.

Blurb:

Teacher Darcy Ferris loves travel almost as much as she loves her Toronto neighborhood. But no matter how far she roams, she always returns to the genteelly shabby Victorian mansion where she grew up, the last place her father lived. Darcy’s world is turned upside-down when the Victorian is slated for demolition.

Since the death of architect Nick Cummings’ mother, his father has retreated from his real estate development business, and from life. In a desperate attempt to interest him in something once more, Nick buys a beat-up Victorian mansion and draws up plans to replace it with a Victorian-inspired condo. He hopes his father’s old spark will return if he helps him build the new condo. But he doesn’t expect such opposition from his new tenant, Darcy Ferris. Nor does he expect to fall in love with her.

Nick and Darcy must come to terms with the past before they can forge a future together. And they’ll need to take the biggest chance of all – on love.

Darcy sure is trying to explain away Nick's interest. ;) Have a feeling she's in for a surprise!
