Happy Book Hooks Wednesday! Today I'm offering an excerpt from I'LL BE SEEING YOU. In this snippet, apprentice angel Gabriel looks back at his mortal life and remembers the heady, wonderful days when he was getting to know Sloane, and falling in love. I hope you enjoy the excerpt!

Excerpt:

Sloane sat across from Gabriel in the private booth at the back of the restaurant. Her hair shimmered in golden waves as it fell across her shoulders. The candlelight lent a soft radiance to her fair complexion. Even her eyes glowed a brighter violet tonight. Gabriel had never seen her more beautiful.

            And he’d never felt this way about a woman before. Like he’d found the other half of himself, the missing piece of the puzzle that was his life.

            He pushed aside that fanciful thought and lifted his wine glass. “Here’s to us.”

            Sloane raised her own glass. “Let me amend that. How about ‘Here’s to getting to know us.’ I want to know everything about you. I want to learn what makes Gabriel Daniels tick.”

            You’ll likely be disappointed. He touched his glass to hers. “I want to know everything about you, too. Why don’t you start? Tell me something about yourself.”

            “All right. My parents are Brad and Toni, and they’ve been married nearly thirty-five years. They’ve lived in the same house for about thirty years. I have a sister named Eden who’s always had a bit of wanderlust in her. She’s travelled all over Canada and the world, working as a journalist. Right now, she’s in Ottawa. I’m very proud of her.”

            “It sounds like she’s doing what she really loves to do.”

            “Yes, I believe she loves her work.” A shadow crossed her face. “Yet, I get the feeling sometimes that she uses her work to avoid coming home.”

            “Why would she do that?”

            “I’m not sure. We used to be so close when we were younger, but for the last several years I feel like there’s a barrier between us.” She shook her head, looking apologetic. “But you don’t want to hear about my family dynamics.”

            Taking her hand, he intertwined his fingers with hers. “You’re wrong. If it’s important to you, I want to know about it.”

            He meant it. He wanted to know everything about Sloane, what made her happy or sad, and what worried or scared her. A need to protect her and take away all her fears surprised him with its fierceness.
