#MFRWhooks Blog Hop - An Excerpt from NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE - What Decade is This?

Hello! Today I have an excerpt from NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE, book 2 in my Twice in a Lifetime time-travel romance. The book officially released on March 15, 2026 and is available on Kindle Unlimited.

In this scene, Joanna realizes that one of the quirks of time travel is that even though she has traveled in time back to the 1970s, she knows all the events that happened between then and the present day. But her memory might be a little fuzzy about details from popular culture from the 70s!

Red roses and pearls with text reading "Book Hooks" and "Marketing for Romance Writers." Romantic and elegant ambiance.

Excerpt:

“Before we get into this, I’ll clear everything with my boss. I’ve already taken on one pro bono case, so if I take on another, it’s likely going to have to be on my own time. But I want to be above board with my firm.”

“I’m sorry, Jo. Are you sure you want to work on your off hours?”

She shrugged one shoulder. “It’s not like I spend my evenings and weekends climbing mountains or jetting off to Paris. It’ll be fine.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean,” Lucas said. “About all I do most evenings is watch TV in my room. My Thursday nights aren’t complete until I hear ‘Goodnight, John-Boy’.”

“Excuse me?”

“You know. John-Boy. On The Waltons? Wholesome show about a family in the Blue Ridge Mountains during the Depression?”

“Oh, The Waltons. I haven’t thought about that show in decades.”

“Decades?” Lucas looked confused. “It hasn’t been on the air that long.”

“Oh.” Gabriel sensed Joanna’s mind whirling as she tried to come up with an acceptable lie.

“I guess I was thinking of a different show.”

Lucas nodded but looked perplexed by her answer.

Nice save, Gabriel told her.

Remembering what decade I’m in is exhausting!

Tell me about it.

Blurb:

Can accepting what can’t be changed give Gabriel’s new client a second chance at love?

Apprentice angel Gabriel Daniels faces his second task in becoming a full-fledged angel. His new client, Joanna Compton, broke up with her fiancé Lucas Kendall in 1971 after a car accident left her paraplegic. She refused to be a burden the way her father was. Eight years later, Joanna, by then a lawyer, declined to take Lucas’ wrongful dismissal case when he came to her for help. Though Gabriel convinces Joanna to go back to 1979, Joanna insists she’s only doing so to give Lucas the justice she should have helped him attain the first time around. She doesn’t want a second chance at love. Gabriel is desperate to change her mind so he’ll be one step closer to becoming a citizen of Heaven.

Meanwhile, Gabriel’s mentor, senior angel Thomas, shows him how much his inability to accept his parents’ divorce and the bipolar disease that runs in his family has cost him.

Gabriel must help Joanna accept the things she cannot change. And Thomas must help Gabriel do the same or neither will truly be at peace.

She's going to have a lot to remember in the late 70s. I'd love to jump to that period.

Been there, done that, Amber! The best thing about the 1970s was that I was young!

*cough, I lived in the 70s, but there would be so much I would NOT recall! I'd be a deer in the headlights. I'm sure Joanna must be overwhelmed with culture and the change of pace.

Same, Lisa. It actually was fun remembering the technology and the way we used to do things. I have a scene with an IBM Selectric typewriter. Remember those? I was the world's worst typist. I can't tell you how glad I was to get a computer and use word processing!

Does the angel communicate with her telepathically? Having the angel transport her is a creative time travel device and it's even better because he's an integral part of the story with his own agenda.

Yes, Gabriel the angel communicates with Joanna telepathically. And yes, Gabriel definitely has his own agenda. He's desperate to get to Heaven!

Yiikes, LOL, if she's hopping decades, she is going to get more confused!

Luckily for Joanna, she's only returning to 1979. But still, it's confusing since she has nearly 50 years of knowledge going forward. And I have a pretty good memory, but I don't know if I remember all the details from 1979!

Yeah, that would be awkward! How many times can she slip up like that before people start suspecting something is weird with her?

Very true, James! She has to be very careful what she says.
