Today I'm sharing an excerpt from NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE, book 2 in the Twice in a Lifetime time-travel romance series. Apprentice angel Gabriel is tasked with giving three mortals a second chance at love in order to earn his wings. He has just begun his second assignment and he has no idea where he is, or what year it is. He's about to find out! I hope you enjoy the excerpt!
Excerpt:
If he hadn’t been dead already, the car crash likely would have killed him.
Apprentice angel Gabriel Daniels pulled himself through the broken passenger window, his ears still ringing from the sickening sound of metal colliding with metal. The driver’s side of the car was smashed into a concave shape, a half-ton truck currently buried in it.
Disoriented and confused, Gabriel staggered away from the wreck. What was happening to him? Was he reliving the car crash that had killed him? No, it couldn’t be. He’d been driving his Lexus, not this nondescript blue compact. His car had skidded off an icy highway on a cold December night and he’d died alone in a ditch, miles from his home in Toronto. Right now, the sun shone brightly on what appeared to be a spring day. And they were in a city. But what city?
Nothing made sense. Until he looked up and spotted senior angel Thomas standing with the crowd on the sidewalk, his old-fashioned attire setting him apart from the other bystanders.
Gabriel stumbled toward him, relieved to see a familiar face. “What happened?”
Remember Gabriel, we angels must speak to each other telepathically when we are in the company of mortals, Thomas admonished. To answer your question, you are right where you are meant to be. This is your next assignment.
A car crash is my next assignment?
Not the crash itself. The aftermath of the crash.
Gabriel groaned. Thomas often spoke in riddles, but he supposed when he became a senior angel, he could drive his apprentices crazy with puzzling statements, too. Can you at least tell me where we are?
Of course. We’re in Ottawa, Canada.
As they watched, people ran towards the wreck of the two vehicles in the intersection. The driver of the truck tried to run away, but two men stopped him and held him.
“He’s drunk! I can smell it on him,” one of them shouted as he grabbed the driver’s arm. “I saw him blow right through that red light.”
“There’s a woman inside the blue car. Someone call an ambulance!” the other man shouted. “And the police!”
“I’ll go to the store on the corner and phone from there.” A woman took off on a run.
Why wouldn’t she use her cellphone to call for help? Gabriel asked.
Because this is 1971.
Blurb:
Apprentice angel Gabriel Daniels faces his second task in becoming a full-fledged angel. His new client, Joanna Compton, broke up with her fiancé Lucas Kendall in 1971 after a car accident left her paraplegic. She refused to be a burden the way her father was. Gabriel must help Joanna accept the things she cannot change. And Thomas must help Gabriel do the same or neither will truly be at peace.

That's an abrupt "job interview" or introduction to a new assignment! No wonder he's disoriented. I am old enough to recall days when we had no cell phones and paper maps, lol. BTW, I adore the book cover!!
What an interesting scene! We take phones so much for granted these days. I remember a friend I was riding with got lost, so she pulled over, got a big box out of her trunk and opened it to reveal a car-phone. I marveled at the high tech. Times sure change.
Perhaps. He's learning a lot about the motivations of others, and he's learning things about himself he never understood before. Plus, that angel magic is pretty cool!
I suspect that this series was difficult to write, Jana. There's so much emotion, not all of it positive.
Wow! There's a lot going on here. Gabriel has plenty to sort out. Well done.
