#MFRWhooks Blog Hop - An Excerpt from WHEN I WAS YOUR MAN - You Ruined My Life

Happy Blog Hop Day! In this excerpt from WHEN I WAS YOUR MAN, senior angel Thomas has Gabriel relive a painful time in his childhood. His father Blake has left the family and now has a new family. Ten year old Gabriel is angry, and his disappointment and bitterness is the beginning of years of resentment.

WHEN I WAS YOUR MAN is book 3 in the Twice in a Lifetime time travel romance series. The series is best enjoyed if read in order, starting with I'LL BE SEEING YOU (book 1), followed by NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE (book 2) and ending with WHEN I WAS YOUR MAN. All three books are currently available on KU!

Red roses and a pearl necklace adorn a romantic setting. Text reads "Book Hooks" and "Marketing for Romance Writers" in elegant script.

Excerpt:

Gabriel sat at the kitchen table, ostensibly doing his fifth-grade math homework. He tried not to listen as Josh excitedly told his father about the fun things they’d been doing in his first-grade classroom to celebrate the end of the school year. Righteous indignation burned in Gabriel’s ten-year-old chest. A couple of weeks had passed since Blake moved out of their apartment, and this was the first time he’d called. Despite being relieved Blake hadn’t completely forgotten them, he was angry. How dare his father leave them for a new family. He’d belonged to them first.

“Okay, Daddy. Bye. See you soon!” Josh held out the phone to Gabriel. “Daddy wants to talk to you.”

Gabriel shook his head. “I don’t want to talk to him.”

Josh’s forehead wrinkled in confusion. “Why not?”

“Because I don’t want to!”

“But Daddy wants to take us to the lake when school is out. He said so.”

“I don’t care. I don’t want to talk to him!”

Josh looked helplessly at their mother. Ellen took the receiver from him and spoke into it, her eyes on Gabriel.

“You heard? I’m sorry, I’ll talk to him.” She listened a moment, her brow wrinkling. “Yes, I understand. Okay. Yes, I’ll call soon.”

She hung up the receiver, then sat at the table across from Gabriel. “Josh, honey, can you play in the bedroom for a bit? I want to talk to Gabe.”

“Okay.” With one last concerned look at Gabriel, Josh skipped out of the kitchen.

Ellen watched him leave and when they heard the bedroom door close, she reached over and laid her hand over Gabriel’s. “Can you tell me why you didn’t want to speak to your Dad?”

Gabriel shrugged and stared down at the table, unable to articulate the angry hurt inside him.

“That’s not an answer, Gabe.” Ellen turned his hand over and intertwined her fingers with his. “Your dad wants to take you and Josh to a cottage at the lake this summer. You can swim in the lake and go on boat rides. Don’t you think that sounds like fun?”

Gabriel remained stubbornly silent. How could it be fun when it wouldn’t be his family at the lake? It would his father’s other family. He wanted nothing to do with them.

They’d ruined his life.

Book cover features a silhouette of a man running in a church, with white wings and a purple clock. Title: When I Was Your Man. Author: Jana Richards.

Blurb:

Will Gabriel sacrifice his own happiness to give his client a second chance at love?

Apprentice angel Gabriel Daniels faces his most difficult challenge. He must convince his third and final client, Sam Jensen, to go back ten years in time for his second chance at love. If Gabriel completes this mission successfully, he will gain entry to Heaven and earn the privilege of watching over the people he loves back on Earth.

Except it’s not clear who Sam was truly in love with ten years ago. Going back may hurt people Sam cares about and end relationships. And it may have surprising results for Gabriel as well.

While Gabriel shows Sam how his resentment toward his adoptive family was misplaced, senior angel Thomas illustrates to Gabriel that his resentment toward his absent father colored every aspect of his life. Including missing out on a relationship with his half-sister.

Gabriel must determine who the love of Sam’s life truly is and help him get a second chance with her. Even if it means sacrificing his own chance for a happy afterlife.

Yes, Gabriel went through some tough times. But a lot of his issues are of his own making.
